Ladies Program
From 9.30 AM. Special Bus with guide and visit of Bellinzona's very well known Castles, now part of UNESCO patrimony. Lunch at Castello di Sasso Corbaro in an unique landscape, with the opportunity to taste a very genuine meal. Return around 2.00 PM - 2.30 PM. The Bellinzona fortifications constitute the only example of well-preserved, late medieval military architecture along the Alpine range. It is made up of three castles (Castelgrande, Montebello, Sasso Corbaro) and a group of fortifications interspersed with towers and defensive structures built in a dominant location overlooking the town of Bellinzona and the entire Ticino valley.
Castelgrande, occupies a site inhabited since the Neolithic period (5500-5000 BC) and fortified since the 4th century. Construction on the current fortress began in the 13th century with the Milanese Visconti family; major changes were introduced between 1473 and 1486. The bianca (white) and nera (black) towers, rising 28 and 27m high respectively, date from the 13th and 14th centuries. The top of the Torre Bianca offers panoramic views of Bellinzona. The castle was renovated from 1984 to 1991, with an elevator, expensive courtyard restaurant, and museum designed to make it more hospitable to tourists. The museum exhibits unique painted panels from the house of a Bellinzona noble and a Swiss coin collection.
The smaller but very satisfying Castello di Montebello, on the hill opposite Castelgrande, offers visitors working drawbridges, ramparts, dungeons, and views as far as Lake Maggiore on a clear day. The tower and former residential quarters now house a mildly interesting archaeological and civic museum containing vases, jewelry, and ceramics, as well as ancient bric-a-brac and ceremonial and military arms.
The Castello di Corbaro (230m above city level), the smallest of Bellinzona's castles, is worth the walk. Take the road from Castello di Montebello or Via Ospedale. The Duke of Milan had the place slapped together in six months after the battle of Giornico (1478), when a Swiss force of 600 defeated 10,000 Milanese. Its Belvedere Museum hosts temporary art exhibits. |
